The Emperor's choice of Monte as his
locale of refuge is testimony to the fact that Monte was very
much sought after by many a foreign visitor to the island.
Not only for spending some great holidays, but also to take
advantage of the great medicinal fresh air and forest aromas
that were very curative and healing for patients suffering
from respiratory and tuberculosis problems. Unfortunately
the golden age of the the classic Monte hotel industry suffered
a rapid decline after the outbreak of World War II. All the
hotels closed down, or later relocated to the cliffs along
the Funchal coastline. Recent efforts, such as the renovation
and extension of, for example, the Estalagem Quinta do Monte,
the Monte Palace Gardens and the planned renovation of the
original Quinta do Monte are expected to revive the former
glory and excellent hospitable climate that many of Madeira's
most distinguished and oldest travelers enjoyed in times gone
by.
